Whiplash and Neck Pain

Approximately 50% of whiplash-related pain after a motor vehicle accident or slip-and-fall incident can be attributed to the cervical (neck) facet joints.

Chronic whiplash pain is a result of ligament and soft-tissue injury due to rapid compression and shearing of the facet joints typically seen in rear-end vehicle collisions. The cervical vertebrae pinch the disk capsules between the bones, causing herniation, bulging and irritation. This stresses the nerves which transmit pain messages to the brain.

FACET NERVE BLOCK INJECTION

Treatment options for cervical disk pain include a series of nerve block injections into the affected area. If these temporary injections prove effective they are followed by radiofrequency neurotomy to disable the affected nerves. This treatment option may provide substantial relief for 8 to 12 months and can be repeated as needed to improve the quality of life for accident victims.
